While Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today expressed joy his son Nick is engaged to be married, not everyone is feeling quite so warm about the PM’s public outpouring of emotion.

Australian Marriage Equality spokesman Alex Greenwich said it was “hard-hearted” of Rudd to remain opposed to same-sex marriage and deny parents with gay children the same happiness.

“It’s hard-hearted of Mr Rudd to deny other parents the joy he says he feels about his son marrying,” Greenwich said.

“Australia’s failure to allow same-sex marriages means parents of gays and lesbians cannot see their children wed, or are forced to travel overseas to see it.

“If Mr Rudd truly values marriage as an important time for families, he will allow all families to share what he feels right now, including those families with gay and lesbian members.”

Rudd revealed the news on Twitter this morning saying he and wife Therese Rein were “over the moon” at the news.

Nick is set marry his girlfriend of three years, Zara, after proposing to her while overseas on Prague’s Charles Bridge.

I gotta admit, I relate to the guy, I am hard-hear tedly opposed to gay marriage
as well. Most likely for different reasons though... most people oppos ed to g
ay marriages are like that because they're opposed to gay rights and stuff.

I'
m just opposed to marriage and all the special benefits they get . Tax breaks f
or couples means more taxes paid by singles. That's just not fair.

If we allow
homose xual marriages, then those gay marrieds will buddy up with...
