A new Canadian sexual health education initiative is using technology to reach out to youth. The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has launched a team of cartoon superheroes to provide educational information about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to youth through an online game.
The new website, GetItOnLondon.ca features The Sex Squad, a group of superheroes who can be summoned by a Batman-like signal light in the shape of a condom. The team works to fight the “terrible Sperminator, whose sole mission is to infect all citizens with various sexually transmitted infections” and includes heroic characters Captain Condom, Power Pap, Willy the Kid and Wonder Vag.
Players can assume one of the superhero roles and answer sexual health questions to save Sex City from the evil Sperminator. The game includes various approaches to safer sex including abstinence, the use of barrier methods, dispelling of common sex myths, regular testing and healthy relationships. It was developed with Mind Your Mind, a London-based nonprofit organization and supported by the Perth District Health Unit.
"Reaching teens and youth is a huge challenge for us, that's why we worked directly with them to develop a resource that would catch their attention while providing important information in a fun way," said Shaya Dhinsa, manager of Sexual Health at the MLHU. "We hope that a lot of young people visit our site, and that while playing the game they get useful information about sexual health."
