Cultural taboos are tested in a new era of freedom
MEXICO CITY – Which of these landmarks doesn't belong in Mexico City's historic center?
a. The Palace of Fine Arts
b. The Cathedral
c. The new sex plaza with 80,000 square feet of strip clubs, adult-movie theaters and boutiques stocked with sex toys
The angry buzz is that a blatant sex beacon has no place in the heart of this centuries-old city, setting the stage for a showdown over this month's opening of the first sex mall in Latin America. As topless posters go up in the three-story building and promoters schedule American porn stars for the opening, city officials are waffling over their approval and warning they may block the inauguration.
Yet in this very Catholic, very traditional country, there's no opposition from the church. And the mall is already attracting hand-holding couples and groups of women curious about the offerings. In Mexico's new era of freedom of expression, ushered in by President Vicente Fox's government, sexual expression has blossomed. Now everyone – from government officials to sexologists to priests – is confronting Mexicans' conflicted attitudes about sex.

In an increasingly global economy, many American adult entertainment companies will no doubt intensify their international marketing efforts — and the more they know about obscenity laws around the world, the better off they will be. Obscenity laws can differ radically from one country to another, and sexually explicit material that isn't even controversial in some parts of the globe can result in long prison terms or even the death penalty in others.
The United States remains the most porn-producing country in the world, but it is far from the most liberal where erotica is concerned. As a general rule, the most porn-friendly part of the world is Continental Europe. Spain, Holland, Portugal, Italy, Greece, France, Denmark and the Czech Republic are generally known for being quite tolerant of adult entertainment, and it isn't hard to find hardcore porn being sold right out in the open in major European cities like Barcelona and Athens. Porn stars often appear as guests on very mainstream television programs in Spain, and Barcelona is the home of Private Media Group (Europe's largest adult company). Meanwhile, the U.K. tends to be more sexually restrictive than much of Continental Europe even though it is one of the world's top porn producers. Like the United States and Canada, the U.K. is a place where erotica is legal as long as it isn't determined to be obscene — and edgy material that Spanish, Italian or Dutch prosecutors wouldn't consider obscene could result in an obscenity conviction in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. How risky the U.K. is for adult businesses depends on the type of erotica involved; licensed sex shops in major U.K. cities regularly sell Vivid, Wicked Pictures and Hustler titles without any problem, and the gay retail chain Clone Zone is an institution in the British gay community. Explicit vanilla porn, both gay and straight, that receives an R18 rating from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) can legally be sold in licensed sex shops. But authorities in the U.K. are notoriously restrictive when it comes to BDSM erotica. In fact, Britain's BDSM community has been quite worried about England and Wales' new "extreme porn" law, which says that one can be imprisoned for three years for simple possession of what British politicians have been loosely describing as "extreme porn." In recent decades, obscenity law in the United States, Canada, England and other major western democracies has dealt with production, sales and distribution rather than simple possession; the U.S. Supreme Court's Stanley v. Georgia ruling of 1969 clearly states that while selling obscene adult entertainment is a crime, merely possessing it is not. But with the "extreme porn" law now in effect, mere possession of what authorities may consider "extreme porn" is now a felony in England and Wales. British BDSM activists fear that Internet users in London or Manchester could be sentenced to three years in prison for merely downloading spanking content, and the London-based BDSM activist Demolition Red has described the "extreme porn" law as "the most draconian anti-porn legislation of any modern western democracy."

Paris Hilton wants to warn young girls from making “humiliating” sex tapes.
The blonde socialite was devastated when X-rated footage of her and ex-boyfriend Rick Salomon surfaced in 2003 and has vowed to stop other girls from agreeing to film themselves engaging in sex acts to please their lovers.
She said: “I want young girls to never put themselves in that situation I was in. Don’t ever let someone talk you into doing something you don’t want to do.”
She added: “I was humiliated, embarrassed and in shock that it happened. It wasn’t my fault, it was something that someone did to me, so I’ve just learned to be a strong woman and nothing can hurt me at this point.
“It was definitely very painful. When you trust someone and love someone - for them to do that to you, it’s really hard. It’s something that bothers me everyday.”
The 28-year-old hotel heiress – who receives a percentage of profits from the footage, which was eventually released as a DVD entitled One Night In Paris - discussed the incident in a documentary about her rise to fame. Paris wants to use the MTV programme Paris, Not France to clear up misconceptions about her party-girl lifestyle. She explained: “I think there are a lot of people that have misconceptions about me. They assume I’m just a party girl and they don’t realise there’s a business behind it. I’ve created this over the past 10 years.
“I think when people haven’t met me they might think that I’m spoiled, that I’m a brat, that I haven’t worked for what I have. I’ve worked very hard for what I’ve achieved. None of this was given to me. I’ve done it all by myself.”

Pet clothing has come a long way since the days when a warm sweater or a rain coat sufficed for a little dog's wardrobe. But now, pet clothing is hardly functional; it's hot, and so are the styles. Short shorts and skin tight t-shirts are not just la mode for teens; Beagles are wearing them!
So, it's no surprise that sex plays a big role in the selling of pet wigs. Take a look at these pet photos and see if they don't speak just a little bit sexy to you.
1. Aww... are you sure you can't spend the night? Pretty please?

The South African Government has warned that HIV/AIDS infection rates may increase when the country hosts the football World Cup in 2010.
The health minister says that a lot of visitors will come for the World Cup and many of them will look for sex.
"2010 is going to come with good things but it may also come with dangerous things," SAPA news agency quoted Aaron Motsoaledi as saying after a meeting of the national AIDS council.
"Of course the concern is: what will be the effect of 2010, which everybody is waiting for? Are we going to find the rate of infection accelerating because of 2010?"
South Africa, with some 5.7 million people infected with HIV, represents the world's largest AIDS epidemic. An estimated 500,000 people are infected each year and around 1,000 die every day from AIDS-related illnesses. The Government hopes the soccer tournament, the world's most popular sporting event, will attract a flood of tourists.
"I mean, we will be having lots of visitors here... we know there will be lots of visitors who come here for sex, you can't hide that. It happens and what will be the effects on this country?," said Mr Motsoaledi.
South African officials have promised to make the streets safe before the World Cup. The country has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world.

The Vatican has attacked Italy's drug regulation agency after it approved the use of the abortion pill RU486.
RU486 is a pill that allows the patient to have a chemically induced abortion instead of a surgical procedure within the first seven weeks of pregnancy.
It has been available in much of Europe since the 1990s.
The Italian Pharmaceuticals Agency (AIFA) has ruled that the abortion pill cannot be sold in pharmacies, but it can be administered by doctors.
The agency announced its decision late on Thursday (local time) after a long meeting during which it was lobbied intensely by the church and Catholic politicians, including many from President Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right government.
The Vatican says it would excommunicate doctors and nurses who prescribed the drug and any patients who used it.
A Vatican spokesman says taking a pill may be less traumatic for a woman, but it does not change the face that it is still abortion.

Woman charged with possession of child pornography for Taking photos of herself breastfeeding!
When does a snapshot of a mother breast-feeding her child become kiddie porn? Ask the Richardson police.
The service was fast, the judgments even hastier. Never did Jacqueline Mercado imagine that four rolls of film dropped off at an Eckerd Drugs one-hour photo lab near her home would turn her life inside out, threaten to send her to jail and prompt the state to take away her kids.
For Mercado and her family, last fall was a happy time, one they wanted to record and save in the venerable tradition of the family photo. Johnny Fernandez, Mercado's boyfriend, had just emigrated from Lima, Peru, ending a yearlong separation, and on top of that, it was their son's first birthday.
The photographs they took over several days in late October included pictures of Fernandez reunited with the family at their modest home in suburban Richardson. Others captured their 1-year-old son Rodrigo, and 4-year-old Pablizio, from Mercado's earlier marriage, playing in a neighborhood park. Using the camera's timer, they also took three snapshots of themselves, naked in their bed. They arranged their bodies in ways that showed less flesh than most freeway billboards.
